Last week turned out to be one of the busiest — and most exciting — voice recording experiences I’ve had in a while.
Because the project is still under wraps, I can’t share the title of the game, the names of the characters, or any details about the story just yet. But I can talk a little about what the experience was like.
When I first heard about the project, I thought I would be recording a relatively small number of roles. As the recording date approached, however, the scope kept growing.
More characters. More voices. More personalities.
By the time I stepped into the recording session today, I was preparing to voice 14 different roles.
Yes — fourteen!
And that was probably the most interesting part of the challenge.
When you’re playing multiple characters within the same world, simply changing your voice isn’t enough. Each character has to feel like a different person. I found myself thinking about differences in age, personality, energy, vocal placement, rhythm, and the way each person might react to what was happening around them.
Some performances required dialogue, while others involved the kind of intense vocal work unique to video games — reactions, exertions, attacks, taking damage, and other sounds that have to communicate a surprising amount without many words.
It can be physically demanding, too. A few seconds of audio in the finished game may require multiple takes and very specific variations in the studio.
That’s one of the things I love about voice acting.
You’re standing in front of a microphone in a recording booth, but in your imagination you have to completely enter another world.
And then, a few minutes later, you may have to become somebody entirely different.
Working through so many characters in one session reminded me how much I enjoy that transformation. It also challenged me to make quick choices and trust my instincts as an actor.
There were definitely moments when I thought, Okay… who am I now? 😆
But once we got moving, the session developed its own rhythm.
I wish I could say more about the game because I’m genuinely excited about this one. For now, though, everything else has to remain a secret.
Hopefully, when the time is right, I’ll finally be able to share the title — and introduce you to all the characters I had the opportunity to bring to life.
Until then, they’ll have to stay behind the microphone.
More to come. 🎙️🎮
